STAR BLUES on 14th August 2011 at 22:00

STAR BLUES is Britain's only FM Commercial show to contribute to the world reknowned LIVING BLUES charts (true since Sept 2000). So why not start off with the current number one album - then go on to back up a claim that our music is back in a big way.

As well as new albums from Ivan Appelrouth, Paul Cox and Jackson Sloan it is the resurgence in interest of the genre among young male African-Americans and corresponding audience: not lost to hip-hop or rap after all. For years it was thought the demographic regarded blues as either old-fashioned or the preserve of white boy plank-spankers. So it was that the Quintus McCormick Band found his way to"Album ofthe Month" in Blues&Rhythm magazine and onto our playlist - and so it was that the 19 year old Marquise Knox brought his lovely unhurried guitar skills not once but twice. With Robert Randolph as well as the Homemade Jamz band, the blues is now a credible voice again without using guitar to show off. More please, you'll hear it here thats a promise.

We chose Isaac Freeman's "Dont Drive Your Children Away" as our gospel spot as an appropriate message at this time of civil unrest. Ann Rabson has had health worries, we wish her bucketloads of good thoughts and celebrated one of her solo outings on Alligator. The classic song "House Of The Rising Sun" fell undere the gaze of our "1001Blues" feature with an insight as to where exactly the House was. I tried to get the influential Nina Simone version that inspired Alan Price and the Animals, got thrown a curve ball with a different version of hers but not the one from 1961 Colpix album.

Two hours just aint enough to fit it all in and the next batch of white tee shirts is stuck in Customs: the silk spun by the Javanese Antartic spider can only be imported in small quantities each month by royal decree. Any one got a spare monarch who loves blues that can do the honours? Back next Sunday with more tomfoolery, until then take care of yourselves and take care of those that take care of you

STAR BLUES on 7th August 2011 at 22:00

Birthday boy Magic Slim rules the roost as far as good-old-fashioned-straight-ahead-no-nonsense Chicago blues is concerned. Perfect choice to open the show this week. The other strong cards in our hand all come from the distaff side of our music: Fiona Boyes, Lula Reed, Ana Popovic, Candye Kane and Laura Chavez. Ana's album shows a maturity and style that mark her out as a major artist in coming years. I just worry that she will be marketed on her looks and pushed away from the blues she clearly loves. (Joss Stone anyone?)

Our 1001blues feature had the best known song from an evergreen legend of blues and rockabilly - "Linda Lu" by Ray Sharpe. I'm indebted to an article in issue#29 of Juke Blues magazine for the background research. Unbelievable bad luck and health worries has kept the duo satan and Adam away from the recording studio, they made a welcome return with "Tell The World" for STAR BLUES. Cedell Davis had polio as a child and it affected his good right hand so badly that he has to pick the strings left handed, his right grips a steel kitchen knife in the table-tennis pen-holder grip over the neck. The resulting uneven pressure adds unique harmonics to his slide playing.

Pinetop Smith did piano duties for us and Earl Thomas great album "Plantation Gospel" brought forth our sacred offering. Mavis Staples teamed up with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Eli "Paperboy" Reed bravely upset all Motorhead fans with an old school soul workout on "Ace of Spades". If you thought they don't make 'em like that anymore, they do. I'm eagerly awaiting another shipment of hand-crafted white tee-shirts in time for this upcoming Sunday at 10pm (BST). Until then take care of yourselves and take care of those that take care of you

STAR BLUES on 31st July 2011 at 22:00

The potency of Buddy Guy's playing belies his 75 years, celebrated on Saturday 30th and with 4 of his tracks on STAR BLUES. He won a Grammy last year with the "LIVING PROOF" album and he was our 2010 artist of the year. The title track was the envy of men a quarter of his age. Top end of the show he was joined by Jeff Beck for a go at "Mustang Sally", taken off his comeback album in 1991 aftger ten years recording hiatus. His debut for Chess made into our 1001 Blues feature and some graceful accompaniment at Muddy Waters' Folk Singer sessions showed his other side.

Our other big thing last night was the chance to play a track from Candye Kane's new album on Delta Groove, due in the shops Stateside on 16th August (not sure when over here). Shes with Laura Chavez who brings some real neat playing. Another strong project from one of our favourite artists.

Ironing Board Sam has just joined the STAR BLUES faithful and we were able to play a funky piece he did in the Seventies for Sansu. His nickname came from balkancing his keyboard on an ironing board for a club gig in his early days, he's since played underwater in a 1500 gallon tank.

Courtesy of Noble Thin Man Watts we had some sax on the side, "Slummer The Slum" from the Five Royales and "T-99 Blues" from Jimmy Nelson. Steve Cropper's newest project is "Dedicated" to Lowman Pauling's Five Royales and he had Steve Winwood on vocals. Marion Williams did gospel duties, Peetie Whetstraw on keys and robust electric blues was by Freddie King.

Another two hour show that whizzed past thanks to your kind invitation to your place. Thanks to everyone for their birthday wishes and I'll be back with another white tee shirt and as much blues and tomfoolery as I can carry next Sunday at 10pm - until then takje care of yourselves and take care of those that take care of you
