STAR BLUES on 7th August 2011 at 22:00

Birthday boy Magic Slim rules the roost as far as good-old-fashioned-straight-ahead-no-nonsense Chicago blues is concerned. Perfect choice to open the show this week. The other strong cards in our hand all come from the distaff side of our music: Fiona Boyes, Lula Reed, Ana Popovic, Candye Kane and Laura Chavez. Ana's album shows a maturity and style that mark her out as a major artist in coming years. I just worry that she will be marketed on her looks and pushed away from the blues she clearly loves. (Joss Stone anyone?)

Our 1001blues feature had the best known song from an evergreen legend of blues and rockabilly - "Linda Lu" by Ray Sharpe. I'm indebted to an article in issue#29 of Juke Blues magazine for the background research. Unbelievable bad luck and health worries has kept the duo satan and Adam away from the recording studio, they made a welcome return with "Tell The World" for STAR BLUES. Cedell Davis had polio as a child and it affected his good right hand so badly that he has to pick the strings left handed, his right grips a steel kitchen knife in the table-tennis pen-holder grip over the neck. The resulting uneven pressure adds unique harmonics to his slide playing.

Pinetop Smith did piano duties for us and Earl Thomas great album "Plantation Gospel" brought forth our sacred offering. Mavis Staples teamed up with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Eli "Paperboy" Reed bravely upset all Motorhead fans with an old school soul workout on "Ace of Spades". If you thought they don't make 'em like that anymore, they do. I'm eagerly awaiting another shipment of hand-crafted white tee-shirts in time for this upcoming Sunday at 10pm (BST). Until then take care of yourselves and take care of those that take care of you
